A common confusion: fillers and Botox are NOT the same. They're two different treatments addressing different problems — and many patients benefit from both. Here's the clear difference and how to know which one you need.
What Botox does — relaxes muscles
Botox (toxin botulínica) relaxes muscles. It treats dynamic wrinkles — lines that appear when you make expressions: forehead lines from raising eyebrows, glabella lines from frowning, crow's feet from smiling. Without muscle movement, no wrinkle.
What fillers do — restore volume
Hyaluronic acid fillers add volume. They treat: lost facial volume (cheekbones, mid-face), lip enhancement, tear trough hollows, deep folds (nasolabial), jawline definition, chin projection. Fillers don't affect muscles or expressions.
Which one for which problem?
Forehead horizontal lines: Botox. Vertical lines between eyebrows: Botox. Crow's feet: Botox. Thin lips: Filler. Hollow under-eyes: Filler. Flat cheeks: Filler. Nasolabial folds: Filler (plus Botox if active). Marionette lines: Filler.
Many patients benefit from both
In your 30s: Botox typically sufficient. In your 40s: combination starts making sense (Botox for upper face + selective filler for emerging volume loss). In your 50s+: combination is the standard (Botox + comprehensive filler protocol).
How to decide for yourself
Stand in front of mirror with neutral expression. Wrinkles you see WITHOUT moving = need filler (volume issue). Wrinkles you see ONLY when making expression = need Botox (movement issue). Often both are present, requiring both treatments. A consultation removes guesswork.
